If you've ever found yourself looking around at other business owners and wondering, “How are they landing podcast interviews, speaking at events, or getting asked to collaborate?” you’re not alone.
Most creative business owners I know feel like they’re doing all the right things: serving clients well, staying consistent on social, building a team, but still feel relatively unknown in their industry.
Here’s the truth: You don’t become an industry expert by waiting for someone else to anoint you. You become an industry expert by showing up consistently and owning your perspective, even before you feel ready.
But if you’re thinking, “That sounds nice in theory, but how do I actually do it?” this post is for you. I'm sharing five simple steps you can take to become known in your space (even if you don’t have a lot of time or a big budget).
1. Define your expert point of view
You don’t need a megaphone - you need a message. Experts are clear about what they believe and aren’t afraid to say it. That doesn’t mean you have to be loud or polarizing. It just means you need to have a perspective.
Ask yourself: What do you believe your industry is getting wrong? What’s the hill you would die on when it comes to your craft or your clients? What do you want to be known for?
Start with one clear, confident idea you can say again and again.
2. Share what you know freely
This is where a lot of creative business owners get stuck. You might wonder, “Why would someone pay me if I share all this for free?” But here’s the truth: generosity builds trust.
You don’t have to give away your whole process. But you can share your thought process, your approach, and your philosophy. Write posts, share quick videos, or go live and talk through your insights. The more people see your brain in action, the more they’ll trust you as the go-to expert.
3. Build relationships with others in your space
Being an expert isn’t just about shouting into the void; it’s about connecting with other people. Follow fellow business owners, engage thoughtfully with their content, and start real conversations.
Don’t think of these people as competition. Think of them as potential collaborators, referral partners, or friends. Opportunities come through people, not algorithms.
4. Pitch yourself for visibility
If you wait until someone asks you to be on their podcast, speak at their event, or teach in their membership, you might be waiting a long time. It’s okay to raise your hand first.
Make a short list of podcasts, summits, or groups you’d love to contribute to. Then reach out with a thoughtful message explaining who you are, what you talk about, and why it matters to their audience.
You don’t need fancy PR. You just need to believe you have something valuable to say - and be willing to say it.
5. Stay consistent
This is the unsexy truth: becoming an expert is not about going viral. It’s about showing up with helpful insights and valuable perspectives over and over again.
You don’t have to post every day or be everywhere. But choose one or two platforms where your ideal client hangs out, and commit to showing up regularly.
The more people see you, hear your voice, and recognize your name, the more they’ll begin to associate you with credibility, leadership, and expertise.
Being seen as an expert is less about proving yourself and more about helping others. If your goal is to serve, to clarify, and to lift up your audience, you’re already on your way.
If you know you’re ready to be seen as a leader in your space, but you're not sure where to begin or how to connect all the dots in your marketing, I’d love to help.
